The most beautiful beach in Tuscany
Long considered the most beautiful beach in Tuscany for the beauty of the landscape and the clarity of its waters, Cala Violina is located in the municipal area of Scarlino, 8 km away as the crow flies. The beach is also easily reached from Follonica to the north (6 km) and from Punta Ala (6 km) and Castiglione della Pescaia (12 km) further south.
Cala Violina owes its name to a peculiarity of the quartz crystals that compose it: when they are trampled, their rubbing produces a characteristic sound that can remember the slight rubbing of the strings of a musical instrument. Not far from Cala Violina, connected by a wide path along the coast that can be traveled on foot or by bike, there are the two beaches of Cala Civette and Cala Martina, the latter known for the daring escape of Garibaldi in 1849.
The beach is located within the Regional Forestry Agricultural Complex of the Bandite di Scarlino, a territory owned by the Tuscany Region of great naturalistic importance. The Bandite interest a good part of the hilly area of Poggio Ballone that rises up to over 600 m of altitude between fascinating and dense forests of oaks and holm oaks populated by wild animals (including wild boars, roe deers, hawks and herons).
Noteworthy in the surroundings: the hamlet of Portiglioni – Puntone di Scarlino (the ancient Portus Scabris), today dominated by the luxurious marina; the medieval villages of Scarlino and Gavorrano with their castles; the hamlet of Tirli, surrounded by woods; the excavations of the ancient city of Vetulonia; the nearby Etruscan village of Poggio Tondo, with necropolis of the seventh and sixth centuries BC.
